Assignment: What Sustains You?

The theme for the Vincentian gARTen is sustainability. Here is a link to a wikipedia definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainability
We have discussed in our first few days, of what sustains us individually and how we can express that visually on the copper leaves of the metal water sculpture. These leaves will be accompanied by words or a quote that will serve to inspire others who view this artwork.

Link to definition of sustain: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sustain

Explain what sustains you and what about it that gives you support.

Include a an inspirational quote, verse or saying that you would include as a part of the gARTen water sculpture.

You will be graded by one or more of your teachers by the depth of your answer.

  1. What a great thing to think about--What sustains me...

In the natural world, I guess you all know--chocolate (good chocolate) sustains me. It's a treat I allow myself when I'm tired, happy, unhappy, enthusiastic etc. But in the spiritual world, in my drive to become more Christ-like in all I do, Jesus sustains me.

I can go for a time without thinking about Him or allowing Him to influence my attitudes, actions, and words, but when I do that, I quickly become depleted. I lose energy and focus, and I lose my joy. So Jesus sustains me. His love provides for all my needs.

Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. - Psalm 54:4

  2. mhmmm...I would have to say basketball ever sense i knew how to dribble i always thought of it as a way out from the pressures and problems of my life. When ever I'm depressed, upset, or down I can always look to basketball to be there for me. But what utlimately sustains me is the love that God has for me for some people that dont know my mother was dianosed with cancer two years ago and is still going through radiation ..i just don't like to talk about it but the faith my mom has shown me gives me no doubt in my mind how much God love us. And he is always with us. Even though all odds are against her she still beleives and trusts in God know matter what. It's just amazing what God has done.

  3. When i am feeling down and depressed i usually turn to music. I like all different types of music depending on my mood. When i come home from a bad day of school i usually put some soothing acoustics on to calm me down. Music gives me support because there is a genre of music for every mood you are in.

  5. I am so blessed to have such a sustainable life. I have friends to turn to whenever life gets me down, and a God to talk to when I'm feeling lowly. I feel that friends are God's way of being there for me physically when I don't feel His presence. My friends console me and remind me that God is always in my life and that He will never abandon me, no matter what. Prayer also sustains me because it is my way of letting everything off my chest and offering my crosses up to the Lord.

  6. Well there are two things that sustain me. First are my friends. I don't think I could live without them. They always help me when I need it and cheer me up when I'm not in a great mood. They make me laugh and I always have fun with them. They're a great bunch of people.
The second thing that sustains me is music. I listen to all types of music depending on how I feel. It's an outlet I escape to when I don't feel like dealing with anything else.

There are many aspects of my life that sustain me, keeping the sky twice as blue and the grass twice as green. The very first thing is definitely my family, friends, and god. I have a big family that I know will always love me and even though I sometimes take advantage of that, I appreciate it more than anything. My friends' support and love is incomparable and I couldn't thank them more. God is the ultimate sorce of everything in this world and without Him I wouldn't have anthing else that sustains me. Therefore, He is my main sustainer.
Sports and music relax me like nothing else can. I like to occupy my time with sports and music because both clear my head and help me focus and calm down no matter what the day may have brought. Nothing makes me feel better than headphones in my hears.
I also really think the ocean, the sky, and the seasons sustain me. It's really amazing to think of the vastness of the ocean, size of the sky, and observe the changing of the seasons. One more thing that sustains me is thinking about the many opportunities out there available to us. We can do anything with God's help and all the things that sustain us.

There are many things that sustain me in my life. My family, friends, and God are just a few.
My family is the first thing that sustains me. They are always there to supprt me in everything I choose to do. I know that I can always trust them with anything. They help me when I am stressed and worried about something. I know they will always be there for me and forgive me. My family is the one thing in my life, my constant, that I know will never go away.
My friends are the second thing that sustains me. They are always available to listen to me when I need to talk. I know that my friends try their best to cheer me up when I am down. My friend's support me in everything and will never let anything bad happen to me.
God is the third thing that sustains me. God is always here watching over me and protecting me. He is the one person that I can talk to when there is no one else around. When I walk towards evil, God always pulls me in to the things that are good in life.

  10. I had to think a lot about this one, then I finally thought of something, but it was not a thing, it was an idea. The idea of a tomorrow. When I am having one of those really bad days, one of those days that never go your way, all through that day, I think that tomorrow will be better, and it will be so great it will make up for today. That idea keeps me going. When I have one of those days, I can just picture one too. A day when you wake up and its pouring rain outside and you step in a puddle and get your sock all wet. Then you fail a test, and then you find out that you have 3rd lunch, when you did not even have breakfast! When you get to lunch, you find out that you are having something you cannot stand, so you eat a cheese pretzel, but they were out of cheese. Then your 4th class is so boring and you cannot focus on anything but your soggy sock, yes, it is still soggy. All through one of those days, I think that tomorrow will be lots of fun, and everything will go my way, it may not though, but you can always hope. I know that God will feel bad for me and my soggy sock, so he will give me a great tomorrow…preferably a sunny one =)

  11. Well when i am very stressed out from school and what not, i usually spill all of my feelings to God in prayer. It is really nice to know that he is there as shoulder that I can lean on to keep me strong and sustain me. Other than my spirituality, music and the outdoors really help me get through the rest of each day. When I come home from a stressful day at school I usually turn on my music and sit outside. It's very soothing to sit outside and just relax after a hectic day.

There are many different things in my life that sustain me. My family, friends, and faith in God are surly the main things that keep me grounded and in control. My family is always there to support me when I take on a challenge, congratulate me when I accomplish something, and pick me up when I am disappointed or feeling sad. My friends and I have a lot of fun together. I can always rely on them for a good laugh. Faith in God is what gets me through hectic days. When things around me are becoming frustrating or overwhelming, I remind myself that God will always be there for me. He will never leave me when I am in trouble or need help. Sports also sustain me. Whenever I am playing a game or going for a run, all of my stress seams to disappear.

My family members guide and support me. They teach me the difference between right and wrong, and are always there to fix situations.

  14. As many have said, the top three things in my life that sustain me are: God, family, and friends. I love turning to God after a long day and just talking to Him and listening to His answers in my heart. It calms me more than anything else does knowing that somebody loves me as much as He does and He is willing to listen to any thing I say, no matter how unimportant it may seem. I always can turn to my family for their support and comfort, and without my friends I would never make it through the day.

However, one thing that really sustains me is nature. The warm glow and customary presence of the sun, in a world of change, is comforting. Watching the delicate snowflakes fall in the winter automatically puts a smile on my face. Snow is sort of magical, each flake is unique and intricate and astonishing. Of the many wonders of nature, what I love most is the feeling of a crisp fall wind carrying with it freshly fallen leaves. This invigorates one better than any cup of Joe could.

    Two quotes:
In first grade when someone got upset, one of my teachers used to say, "it's not the end of the world." Even today I find comfort in these words because when I am stressed I realize that its not worth all the worry.

While vacationing in Georgia I also saw this phrase painted on the side of a quaint building, "Under all is land." I love this quote because it reminds me that nobody is better than anybody else. God created us equal and I am not inferior or superior to anyone. --Lauren Peirish

  17. There are two things in my life that sustain me. They are baseball and friends and family. Maybe that is 3 but oh well. My friends and family sustain me because they are the ones that always keep me going. My parents are there to push me and my friends are there to just have a great time with. Baseball sustains me because it is just something I am comfortable with and is something that just takes me away from everything else and I can relax with.

  18. what sustains me? well when meeting with the copper fountian for the gARTen headed by Jan Loney, we were asked this. A majority of the people said friends and family sustain them and like everyone else so did I, but it is soo true. Think about it anytme you have something to say who do you tell, not random stangers or ur pet. No, you tell your friends or your family. Anytime you experience a hardhsip you turn towards them. So i would have to saay my frienmds and family are what keeps me going in hard time. Many people also said music or sports. I play soccer and basketball mainly becasue I am not very musically or dramatically inclined. However through these two sports I have learned to change, for the better. I have learned to be a teammate and a leader. These potistions can be applied in everyday situations aswell.
Thorugh everything I do I try to model my life after Jesus. I may mess up many times and fail in my actions, but I try.

  19. Two things sustain me the most. One, I'd have to say, my family. They're who I go to when I need to talk to someone, my brother Phil specifically. We're best friends and can always tell each other things we don't want to talk to anyone else about. We have inside jokes and times where we've been each others 'rock' through some rough times. He's always been a shoulder to lean on, a person to hug, a smile when I can't find one, and just a general good friend.
The second would be my friends. The love and support I have from them at every moment of everyday is amazing and incomparable. No one could feel as lucky as I do to have them in my life.

  20. I think that it is my family, friends, and God that sustains me the most in my life. Whenever I am going through a tough time, I can always count on all of them to lift my spirits and help me with tough choices. Whenever I cannot focus on the right path, or simply do not have the strength to, I can always turn to God, my family, and my friends for support. They are always there for me, and I can always talk to them. It is our love for one another that sustains all of us.

  21. What sustains me is dancing. I can pour my heart out through every step I take depending on the song. I usually listen to the song, and think deeply about the emotion put into the words or music, and let that spill out through experiences I have. I have noticed that when I haven't danced for a period of time, a lot of things bother me more than they should.

Ironically, one of my main staples, reading, doesn't really relate to keeping oneself alive. That is, in an immediate sense, such as breathing or sleeping. 23. I would say cheerleading sustains me. Its something i've always done, and always loved. Not only does it keep me phyically fit but it always keeps me thinking. Cheerleading is a team sport, teamwork is key. Even without one person, the routine can't be completed. The whole time we're running the routine and feeling as if we'll pass out before the music ends, we always know that there is someone behind us, pushing us through, knowing it'll all be worth it. Also when im cheering, i can never think ahead, i always have to concentrate on what im doing at the moment or it won't hit.

Sup I would have to say that lacrosse sustains me. When we work out I feel better and get in shape. This sustains me because I know I’m being healthy. But also I’m kind of violent in nature. So I like hitting things and on defense you are hitting people basically every time they move. This helps me blow off a lot of pressure that I build up through my own thoughts. In a spiritual sense God only seems to sustain me when I pray to him. When I found out my dear friend had died I prayed like a puritan on Sunday and felt a little better but my prayer life not being as strong I don’t feel sustained by the bread of life. Another thing that sustains would probably be my phone. It connects me to my world and helps me talk to anyone basically anytime. The final thing that sustains me would be music. it helps me mellow out and chill and kinda forget the world and disconects me the opposite of what my phone does.

  27. Besides my friends and family, the two things that sustain me the most in the world, are music and nature. One of my favorite things to do is to sit on my porch before a storm when the wind blows my hair all over my face, and listen to Kurt Cobain crooning softly on my I-pod. The feeling of being surrounded by nature and forces bigger than me is so beautiful, and in a way powerful. That knowledge allows me to let go of anxiety, fear, and sadness because the world is so much more in control over everything. Also, it is a constant reminder of how God controls every aspect of my life. No matter what I am feeling, it doesn’t really matter because God has a certain and specific plan for me. Music has a way of reaching into the corners of my heart and allowing me to re-center myself even when I am feeling down. Nothing beats hearing other people making music of the emotions you are feeling at that very moment.

“When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
    Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down on your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
    Could it be worse?

    Lights will guide you home
    And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you”

    What sustains me...tricky.

I don't think any one thing sustains me. I think it is many things, a veritable melting pot that produces sweet nectar. Many things go in: family, friends, hobbies, books, movies, lacrosse, outdoor activities, faith in God, and on and on and on.

My family, my friends and faith are a rock that I can build my life on and not worry about everything crumbling down because of one bad decision. Lacrosse and outdoor activities challenge me to try my hardest, and to push my limits. Books and movies allow me to escape the troubles of the moment and submerge myself in fantastic worlds where anything is possible. Finally, my hobbies (such as model building) give structure and order to my hectic life.

Some days, one support comes into play more than the others. Other days, all of the parts play in a harmonious symphony, creating music to the ear. These are generally the best days. That is what sustains me.

  29. Whenever I'm not feeling too well I'll usually put on some clips of Patriot's linebacker Tedy Bruschi. I know what you're all thinking now but I think everyone should look up to him. Two days after being in the Probowl he suffered from a heart attack and was automatically unofficially declared retired by doctors. After many long, hard months of recovery he made it back to playing football.

Whenever I watch clips of him it really shows how you should never give up. God is always there to guide us through the hard times. We should all know that there is better for us (Heaven) and that one stupid mistake shouldn't hold us back from getting there. We should never give up on doing good and trying to get to Heaven.

  31. Adam Dian- Many people, things, and opportunities sustain me. My friends, family, and faith in God sustain me in life. When I need them the most, I know that my family will be there for support and that is a gift I unknowingly take advantage of. My friends are always there for me and that is something that no one else can do. But most importantly, God is there for me. He keeps close watch over me, and guides me to do the right things, and that is what sustains me the most. Another part of me that sustains me is sports. They take my mind off of my problems and allow me to focus on other issues, and that sustains me.
However, the most important thing that sustains me are my goals. I make an effort to try hard at every aspect of my life, and at the end of the day if I know I have done the best I can, that sustains me.

My family is very encouraging. They are always there to help with school work or a problem I am facing. Also, when I am stressed or afraid, my parents and siblings know how to cheer me up.

  33. What sustains me? Where to begin? I think hope for the future sustains me the most. Everyday when I wake up, God gives me another chance to live my life the way I should. Even if I make mistakes, there is always another chance to succeed and make amends for what I have done wrong. God gives us all second chances. It is his love for me that gives me hope and sustains me each day.

My friends and family also sustain me with their support and their love. I am grateful for the ways in which they teach me about life and myself, and how they reflect Jesus’ example in their lives. Relaxing music also sustains me, because it helps me to unwind and escape from the day's frustrations and stress. Finally, I have to say hot showers are very invigorating. All of these things sustain me and help me to keep going.

  34. Jenni Swegan—Well, to start off, I think it’s kind of a given that my friends and family are a big part of what sustains me. I don’t really have anything to say about them that people haven’t already said—I love them and they love me, and I can never express how much I appreciate their support and care.

Other than the people I care about, I would say a big source of sustenance for me is photography. Taking pictures is my escape. I can leave my world and its problems behind—tell a different story, bring life into the mundane, and learn to see the wonder and possibility in the world around me. It helps me to stay positive, and gives me an outlet for all my emotions and experiences. With all the random thoughts that have a way of bouncing around like crazy in my head, it’s nice to always have a way to clear my mind and create.

What sustains me most is something that can't really be understood by people who have never experienced it. I am sustained by the summer academic camp I go to called Center for Talented Youth (CTY). That probably sounds strange, but to CTY-ers it makes perfect sense. At CTY, you take a class of your choice (I normally take a writing course) and spend 3 weeks learning it. But the most important part about CTY is the people there. Everyone is so open and friendly that I expect every person I meet there to be amazing. One person will wear a duct tape Batman mask made by their hall mate and talk in a perfect imitation of Batman's voice. Another person will recite a poem with a ridiculous number of memorized digits of pi in it for the student-run tradition of Poetry Night. If someone's feeling sad, they're sure to get plenty of hugs from their friends without needing to ask. Describing the amazing friendships that form in only 3 weeks is a cliché for CTY-ers. And, as students have said, although we have to leave CTY, CTY and the friends we've made there never leave us.

On a deeper level God certainly sustains me. I know He has a plan for everyone and all fulfill it, I pray that He may lead me to my plan as well. By having God in your life you can certainly appreciate his creation and works on a far more deeper level.
